Surya Textech began manufacturing polypropylene spunbond nonwovens with a single-beam, 3.2 meter line in Kala Amb (HP) India in 2008. At this time, the spunbond industry was very nascent in India, according to Anurag Gupta, CEO, Surya Textech.

The company’s founders had a strong technical background and have been in the textile industry for the past 25 years. They were very keen to bring technical textile manufacturing to India, at a time when such manufacturing was almost non-existent in the country, he says.

Surya Textech soon established itself as a leading supplier in the packaging and medical segments of spunbond fabrics. It subsequently expanded its capacity with a three beam SXS line together with an offline surface treatment plant and one extrusion lamination/coating line in 2012. This enabled the company to enter into the hygiene market and offer lower GSM fabrics. In 2016 the company again upgraded its capacity by adding meltblown to its existing SXS line to produce SMS fabric together with newly developed soft laminates for operating room disposables such as drapes, gowns and sterilization wraps. Altogether, Surya Textech produces 7000 mt/pa of nonwovens and laminates.

“When Covid-19 cases started building up in February 2020, [we] were the first and only company in India to offer SITRA (a government CoE Lab) certified fabric for medical coverall in the first 45 days,” says Gupta. “Today [we] are a leading name in the medical nonwovens and laminates market with the largest variety of ready stock and consistent quality.”

According to Gupta, the medical and operating room apparel markets are growing at a sustained speed in India and Asia. The company expects a sustained growth in consumption of single-use medical wear in India as the government is clearly focused on better healthcare and the prevention of hospital acquired infections (HAIs). “[We] are fully prepared to play [our] part in it, by providing uncompromising quality fabrics and laminates at a price that encourages quick and large adoptions,” he says.

Surya Textech is currently looking into entering a new segment of protective wear with its anti-static nonwovens and microporous film laminates. The company is going through a project phase of building its capacity for this technology and is working with some global brands of medical apparel to supply medical nonwovens and laminates. It is also aligning with global brands of protective wear. In the next six to 18 months, Surya Textech plans to showcase its complete range of fabrics and laminates at global exhibitions. “We look forward to using our expertise for creating a niche in tough Indian and global markets,” Gupta says.

What sets Surya Textech apart, according to Gupta, is that it has a clear focus on the medical and protective wear segment. Secondly, it offers one of the largest ranges of nonwoven fabrics, laminates for medical and protective wear disposables to pass on global standards like ASTM F2100, EN 14683, EN 149, AAMI PB70, EN 13795, EN 1149-5, EN 14325 and EN 14126, among others. “Flexibility, adaptions, developing customer needed new products and keeping large SKUs ready in stock for quick service stand us apart from the competition,” Gupta adds.
